Thanks to the tax cuts, our local small businesses are expanding, paying down debt, increasing wages and updating equipment. With the Foxconn project underway it is crucial to aggressively expand workforce development programs to meet the demand for skilled workers.
Currently we have growing programs involving Dual Enrollment, Youth Apprenticeships and GPS where high school students can gain the skills needed to enter the workforce directly after graduation. These are great options for students and for many they make more sense than traditional four year college degree programs.
I have met with school superintendents, business owners, HR managers and students regarding the roadblocks to expanding workforce development programs in our district. This is an area I will continue to pursue when elected.
